Biography

Samuel Stewart Kelly, a biomedical electronics expert from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, passed away on February 13, 2008. Mr. Kelly’s tenure comprised a series of special projects for medical scientists. Projects ranged from building a complete electrophysiology laboratory to assisting in the development of a miniature mass spectrometer for use on the NASA space shuttle. Due to the importance of his contribution to stem cell research, Mr. Kelly was deferred from the selective service upon request from Dr. Theodore Puck, a pioneer in somatic cell genetics. Studies with Dr. Sydney Margolin included psychoanalysis of education abilities of the Ute Indians and psychophysiologic benefits of hypnosis. Mr. Kelly was intricately involved in research of the physical effects of high altitude. His expertise was utilized in studies that measured oxygen-deprivation during the birth of newborns, as well as in determining the cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). He performed electrophysiological circuit design and instrumentation when he built the first electrophysiology program in the Rocky Mountain Region, under the direction of Dr. Michael Reiter. Mr. Kelly custom-designed and constructed a plethysmography unit, which evaluated peripheral vascular diseases, according to specifications by given by Dr. William Hiatt. After 33 years of service to the Health Sciences Center, Mr. Kelly retired and founded a music company, Notes of Joy. He spent the next ten years pursuing his love for music by traveling the country to teach instrumental music and enhance church bands and orchestras. For over 40 years, Mr. Kelly was actively involved in his church, Calvary Apostolic, including teaching classes and directing the orchestra. Mr. Kelly is survived by his wife of nearly 42 years, Vonda; a son, Samuel; and a daughter, Vonelle, and two grandchildren.
